First Church was established in Invercargill in 1860 and moved into its iconic sanctuary on 155 Tay Street in 1915. The sanctuary was re-modelled in 2016-17 following a fire in late November 2015. First Church is unique in NZ, combining a 100 ft. Romanesque Tower with an octagonal Byzantine sanctuary. The sanctuary can comfortable seat 450 people, and currently houses a Johannes D470 Organ and has an acoustic well suited to choral singing. The sanctuary is also home to a nationally recognised collection of beautiful stain glass windows.
First Church has been responsible for planting a number of congregations in the city over the years including:
St Andrews Presbyterian on Elles Rd. in 1890 by the Rev Andrew Stobo, (formerly of First Church), and
St Davids on Regent Street in the late 1950’s.
At the start of the 21st Century the majority of our congregation were older than average but that is changing as a younger generation seek solace amongst the demands and pressures that come with life in this fast paced modern society.
To help welcome all new an old members we have a variety of regular social and study groups, Sunday school and public worship times to encourage anyone to join in.
We are forever grateful to our good fortunes and support of this wonderful community and with that mindful of those not as fortunate.
